“Friend, do it this way – that is, whatever you do in life, do the very best you can with both your heart and mind…When one sits in the Hoop of the People, one must be responsible because all of Creation is related. And the hurt of one is the hurt of all. And the honor of one is the honor of all. And whatever we do affects everything in the universe.” Lakota Instructions for Living
In The Strength to Love, Martin Luther King Jr. writes: “One day we will learn that the heart can never be totally right if the head is totally wrong. Only through the bringing together of head and heart – intelligence and goodness – shall man (and woman ) rise to a fulfillment of (their) true nature…”
Shall we rise to our true nature? Shall we have the moral fiber and courage to change the course of history and turn this world around in the direction of love and compassion?
You who are reading this can understand big ideas and have the power to make a difference in your community and our world. I remind us of the Instructions for Living from the Lakota people as passed down from White Buffalo Calf Woman. May one day, at least in the lifetime of your children, we return to the ways of the Lakota. For “the hurt of one is the hurt of all. And the honor of one is the honor of all. And whatever we do affects everything in the universe.”
Attitude + Power = Performance
“We believe that socially engaged young people have the knowledge that their actions can effect positive change. They possess an awareness and motivation about the need for positive change in their world that is based on knowledge. They have the skills and capacity to make a contribution. They are resourceful, connected and experienced; they know how to access and navigate their ways through different settings and institutions to find and create opportunities to be engaged in purposeful collective action that can lead to positive social change or improvements in conditions for themselves and others. ” Forum for Youth Investment
